Rak Media Leads in celebrating ICT Day-Girls in Tech,2023
International Girls in ICT Day is a global initiative that aims to encourage and empower girls and young women to pursue careers in the field of information and communication technology (ICT). This annual event, highlights the importance of gender diversity in the ICT sector and seeks to bridge the gender gap in technology.
Despite significant progress in recent years, women continue to be underrepresented in the technology industry. According to the statistics, only 24% of computing jobs are held by women. This lack of diversity not only limits the talent pool but also impacts the development of technology solutions that cater to diverse needs and perspectives. Recognizing the need to promote gender diversity, many organizations around the world are taking action to encourage girls and young women to pursue careers in ICT. These initiatives include mentorship programs, scholarships, training opportunities, and awareness campaigns. RAK Media Group, a corporate entity that aims to empower and inspire women in the technology industry. Through its programs and initiatives, Rak Media Group provides opportunities for women to develop their skills, build their networks, and advance their careers in technology.
International Girls in ICT Day is celebrated in over 150 countries globally. This is to celebrate girls and young women in ICT and encourage others to pursue studies and careers in the technology sector through training. RAK Media in conjunction with the National Communications Authority celebrated the First Ever Girls in ICT Day in South Sudan to communicate the importance of bringing awareness at the grassroots level on the importance of girls in South Sudan embracing ICT through courses and convince them to take that bold step towards joining careers in ICT. This celebration also included Technology experts such as Quadrant Softwares, Dynamic Consult, RABA Taxi and governance experts from UNDP.
The theme for this year is ‘Digital Skills for Life’. This can simply be interpreted as A time will come when IT will run our lives, so as South Sudanese we need to prepare our Youth to embrace technology. The economy of the future will undoubtedly be driven by technology. Therefore, it’s essential girls and women position themselves to take advantage of these opportunities by pursuing a career in I.C.T.
RAK Media adopted 20 girls from Juba Diocese Model Secondary School and partnered with Scenius Hub ,a technology hub where South Sudanese youth can showcase their talent. Scenuis hub has continually worked with different NCA and the ITU to administer courses to young Sudanese girls. The speaker of the National legislative assembly promised a sponsorship of girls from all 10 states and 3 administrative areas in South Sudan to pursue ICT courses through Jemma Nunu Kemba Foundation, this will enable them to become ICT expert in the technology industry. She further promised to push an agenda where ICT will be compulsory in Schools. Through these initiatives, girls and young women are given the opportunity to explore their interests in technology, learn new skills, and connect with industry professionals.
